East Dorset 24 - 11 North Dorset III

East fielded a strong looking side against North who were starting with only 14 players due to a car delay. Hoping to get off to a flyer East surrendered possession to easy early on and it was the visitors who scored first. Running from deep they broke the home defence line and good hands saw the ball out on the left wing for a try in the corner. Conversion missed and the hosts looking slightly nervous it was 5-0 to North Dorset.

East finally gained some good ball and a few kicks over the top started to give a good platform of territory. Before the visitors could get their 15th man on the field Sam Tresman got the ball on the North 10metre line, from quite a static start he jinked through a defensive line and rounded the full back to score. Sam Seal converted.

East then missed a penalty but went further ahead when a good running move saw a ruck formed under the posts, the ball was spun out wide to the left where Tom 'spanky' Robinson scored. Con missed. North pushed back and were awarded a penalty 15m inside Easts half, it was well struck for 12-8 to the hosts.
Just before the half time whistle East secured good territory and once again great hands,(which were to elude East in the 2nd half) saw captain Henry Stapleton go over. Con missed.

HT East 17 North 8

The second half was more of a scrappy affair and as mentioned breaks that East made were coming to nothing due to handling errors or wrong decision making. North, to their credit were defending well and frustrating the hosts. This lead to another well taken pen which put the score to 17-11 and the visitors well in touch.

East steadied the ship and had possession and territory but again failed to secure points. It was, infact, an attack from North which saw Sam Tresman intercept a pass on the half way line and sprint home to score. Seal converted to effectively end the contest.

The last few mins was played in midfield and when the ref called a scrum with time up, Easts coach asked for hands to maybe go for a Tresman hat-trick. Scrum won scrum half and m.o.m. Karl Bumstead completely ignored him and booted into touch. Cheers Bummers!

A good game and hopefully a platform for East to build on with a good line up on the pitch. Well done to North Dorset, starting without the full 15 but giving a good account of themselves. A credit to their club.

EDRFC v Puddletown RFC Match Report

RFU South West Division, Dorset and Wilts 2 South Result: East Dorset 13 – Puddletown 10 Venue: Iford Lane Veteran Howard Larkin produced a man of the match performance to help guide East Dorset to their third win of the season with a victory over Puddletown. The visitors started strongly and scored after 10 minutes with a lineout maul and drive to give them a try they converted. East Dorset really stepped up and attack after attack really stretched the impressive defence of the visitors. East Dorset were awarded a succession of penalties which they decided to use their dominant pack, lead by Larkin to scummage Puddletown and give space for a try. To their credit, Puddletown defended these well. East Dorset’s problem all season has been the amount of penalties given away and were pinged within range of the posts which Puddletown duly took and the pen was slotted over. East’s offensive endeavours were rewarded with a penalty late in the first half which fullback Jason Giddins put over to Puddletown to make it 3 – 10 at half time. East’s forwards continued to dominate and the possession gave wonderful opportunities to attack. After 20 minutes the pack gathered passion allowing Tim Root to dab down from a maul to score. Giddins converted and despite Puddletown pressure late on East Dorset held for the win.

East Dorset 15 – Oakmedians II 27. Dorset & Wilts Divison 2

Dorset and Wilts 2 South, East Dorset 15 – Oakmedians II 27, A healthy and lively crowd saw East Dorset lose to local rivals Oakmedians II. Oaks dangerous backs opened the scoring early with a converted try, 0 – 7. East Dorset showed resolute defence with waves of Oaks attacks before Alex Giddens finished a fine team effort by scoring in the left corner, 5 – 7. Oaks continued with pressure throughout the first half but a determined defence kept them out. They eventually prevailed with another converted try to make it 5 – 14 at half time. Shortly after the break Oaks were attacking strongly once more. However, with a great turn of speed and brilliant timing Chris Poole intercepted a pass between the Oaks centres to race under the posts and score with Sam Seal converting. East’s really came back into the game but started to suffer injuries as Oaks applied pressure through their powerful forwards. That pressure brought them another converted try and a penalty to make the final score 15 – 27

Saturday 29th Oct 2011 Top of the table clash EDRFC v OAKS. Match kicks off at 1500 in this SSE Dorset and Wilts Div2 clash of League leaders Oaks v 2nd placed EDRFC. Who wil come out on top of the table at the end of the day. Bar open from 1330, come along and show your support, to what will be a very competitive and physical encounter between the two local rivals.

North Dorset RFC 25 - 19 East Dorset RFC

It was the North Dorset outfit that were yet to win a game this season, who were to take the points in this win over an as yet unbeaten East Dorset team. After a spritely start by the East that saw them take a 14 point advantage inside the first 15 minutes, it appeared to be business as usual for them building on their unbeaten start to the season. However a very dogged performance by the North Dorset pack saw them ruck and maul them back into the game and bring them back to within 7 points at the break. The second half started off with the North Dorset number 10 using the wind to their advantage ensuring the East remained pegged into their own twenty two.

It was again the turn of the North pack to do the damage with some tireless effort ensuring the score from the replacement hooker. With some swift handling the East backs ran in a third try to take the lead again before the self destruct button was pressed, from dropped high balls at the back, to needless penalties the last 15 minutes saw the Northern outfit camped in the Easts half, eventually overcoming the stalwart defence for the replacement hooker to come away with his second try that was to prove decisive.

A penalty in front of the posts sealed the win with only 5 minutes left on the clock.

A losing bonus point however, coupled with other results going in the favor of East Dorset mean they sit second in the league 4 points behind Oakmeadians.

The EDRFC fixture next Saturaday 29th October against OAKS will definatley not be for the faint hearted.

Kick off 3pm at the Iford Lane home of East Dorset RFC.

EDRFC today travel to their county rivals North Dorset. The North Dorset outfit have had an indifferent start to the season, but will prove a testing opposition for EDRFC , especially up front in the pack.

East Dorset 41 - 19 Swindon College Old Boys

KO: 14:30 Attendance: 110 (Thank you everyone)

It may have taken 21 Years in the making but East Dorset RFC have put paid to the demons that are Swindon College Old Boys by exacting them a crushing defeat in the Dorset and Wilts First XV Plate.

Revenge is sweet and so were the after match beverages after East Dorset RFC put Swindon Collage Old Boys to the sword in the Dorset and Wilts Plate, in a match that was a re-run of the two teams that competed in the final of this tournament in 2009. This time though it was to be EDRFC who came off the pitch victorious.

Not only was this cup victory an achievement in its own right, but it was the first time since EDRFC moved to their Iford Lane Headquarters that they have managed to overcome the Swindon College Old Boys.

The victory was summed up by a veteran of some of those previous encounters (Stu Wilson) and now first team coach, "the win is an extreme hangover in the making, and is testament to the commitment the team shows to the club and each other, be they young or old thank you one and all"

Question: I've have recently got into the age old arguement of who are better drivers. I just want some solid statistics on the matter. I've heard that men get in many more accidents, but that is because there are more men driving and they drive alot further than women do... so when you account for mileage women get in more accidents...is this true? Maybe you can answer the question...who are better drivers...males, or females?

Answer: Firstly, Congratulations on being the first question answered... it was a difficult choice.. but yours was clearly a question that needed anwering quickly. We have gathered statistics and studies regarding gender related vehicle accident rates and risky driving behaviour. D&W Cup Fixture is Postponed

EDRFC are very sorry to announce that due to the adverse weather conditions this week the cup game against Colerne has ben postponed.

Colerne have been unable to locate their pitch under 25cm's of snow - which does seem a good enough excuse. So this fixture will once again be rescheduled for a later date.

We asked for some evidence and we were sent this photo ;o)

However, some good news is:

The world's most successful rugby tournament is about to resume in earnest as the 2009 Six Nations gets under way on 7 February.

Now in its 10th season since the old Five Nations became Six, Wales will be defending the title they won with a Grand Slam last year, their second in four years.

So will Warren Gatland's side be celebrating again come Saturday, 21 March, the final day of this year's championship? Can England recover from a sobering autumn? Will Ireland regain their old spark? Can Scotland convert promise into real progress? Or will Italy - who joined the party in 2000 - confound expectations?

In this wonderfully unpredictable event, nothing is certain. Except that EDRFC can now get on the piss and watch the opening games!!

Congratulations to US Portsmouth who are topping the table at the half way point. It certainly is shaping up to be an interesting and competitive 2009. Merry Christmas to all the teams/referees that make saturday afternoons alot of fun.

The Green String Is Dead, Long Live The Red Lanyard

A lanyard, laniard, or wrist strap is a rope or cord often worn around the neck or wrist to carry something. Aboard ship, it may refer to a piece of rigging used to secure objects, or to a cord with a hook at the end which is used to fire a cannon.

For many months now, the green piece of string with the club keys at one end has been incorrectly referred to as “The lanyard”. In actual fact, it has only ever been a green piece of string with club keys at one end.

To rectify the situation, club Skipper Morgan, has taken the keys and moved them onto a red Lanyard. This Lanyard is red and is a Lanyard; it’s not a green piece of string. Long live the new red Lanyard!

As you can see, the keys also have naturally moved into a holy position, through no interaction from he who took the photo. Blessed be this club and all who use this lanyard.

Morgan Writes You All A Letter

It’s been a while since my last message to you all, so I thought it best to get one in before the New Year which seems to have come around at a frightening pace. I trust all the club members are well and looking forward to Christmas, which links me nicely to remind you all that we need your places and more importantly money in for the Christmas Dinner. We will be selling tickets at every opportunity, so please lets get as many of you there for what is always a cracking night.

There is no point me glossing over the fact that this season is proving to be our toughest in recent years. After all, there is a league table to tell us that and it would be fair to say that we are having a bad run of things. I don’t believe in being pointlessly positive just to make things easier to the ear, but I do think we must take stock and more importantly have patience.

In the scheme of all things rugby, even compared to all the clubs around us in the local area; East Dorset are a very small club. I am very proud of the way we have come up through the divisions, and I don’t think there is a club in Hampshire 1 that relishes playing us that much. In other terms, we punch way above our weight on the field given the weight behind us as a club.

What is important to remember is that with our size comes the reality of ups and downs. We have enjoyed 5 years of great achievement and success, due largely to a large amount of similar age players joining the club at the same time, mixed with excellent coaching. The flip side of that is of course that those same players will stop playing at the same time, for a host of perfectly normal, everyday reasons.

We now have to do everything we can to facilatate the player base that is here now, whilst always keeping ourselves the sort of the club that new players will enjoy being part of. As long as we do that, when the next wave hits as it will, our beloved club will be in a position to move onwards and upwards once more. In real terms, this means being there at training, supporting social events and every member and player alike doing their bit.
